The UK has welcomed the publication of the first international Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Code, providing a global framework for the safe operation of remotely operated and autonomous cargo ships. Developed through the International Maritime Organization with significant input from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the non-mandatory Code aims to support innovation while improving safety and regulatory consistency. It will undergo a two-year experience-building phase before a mandatory version is expected to come into force by 2032.
