DESNZ has published new guidance on assessing and controlling operational noise from onshore wind turbines, replacing the long-standing ETSU-R-97 framework. The guidance sets updated noise assessment criteria and monitoring methods to ensure nearby residents receive reasonable protection from wind turbine noise while supporting the continued development of renewable energy projects. It introduces clearer approaches for setting site-specific noise limits, assessing cumulative impacts from multiple wind farms, and enforcing compliance through planning conditions, reflecting advances in turbine technology, current evidence, and the UK’s net zero objectives.
