The MCA has published an update to this marine guidance note, which explains that shipowners, employers and anyone in control of work on board a vessel all have a legal duty to protect not only their own employees, but also contractors, trainees, passengers and other people affected by ship operations. It stresses that companies must coordinate health and safety arrangements, share risk information, and ensure contractors and crew work safely together, while all workers are expected to report safety concerns. The notice applies to merchant ships and fishing vessels under the Merchant Shipping and Fishing Vessels (Health and Safety at Work) Regulations 1997.
