The MCA has published MSN 1908 (M+F) Amendment 3, which sets out the detailed technical requirements for complying with the UK’s ballast water regulations, which aim to prevent the spread of invasive marine species. It requires ships to manage ballast water safely through approved treatment systems or exchange procedures, carry an approved ballast water management plan, and keep accurate records of all ballast operations.
The notice also reflects updates to international IMO standards, clarifies compliance expectations, and applies to a wide range of vessels and operators, ensuring consistent environmental protection and enforcement across UK shipping.
