The Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulations 2025 (SI 2025/1280) repeal and replace the UK’s previous 2016 marine equipment rules (and related 2019 amendments) with a single, updated framework that sets out how marine safety and pollution-control equipment must be approved and used on UK-flagged ships, including bringing ballast water management systems into scope, allowing an “equivalence” route for using non-UK approved equipment in certain cases, and excluding government ships from the regime, in order to simplify, clarify and align the UK’s marine equipment regime after Brexit.
