The NSTA warns that operators must urgently address the backlog of over 500 overdue North Sea wells awaiting decommissioning to avoid losing rigs and causing billions in additional costs for themselves and taxpayers, noting that while some companies are meeting their obligations, many are falling behind, with more than 1,000 additional wells expected to require decommissioning between 2026 and 2030.
