The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued Official Record Series 4 (ORS4) No.1627, extending the deadline for helicopter terrain awareness and warning system (HTAWS) compliance on certain offshore helicopters. Originally set for 1 January 2025, the requirement now allows continued operation until 30 June 2027. This extension applies to Airbus Helicopters H145/H175 and Leonardo Helicopters AW139/169/189 models operating under an SPA.HOFO specific approval.
The delay follows challenges in upgrading HTAWS capabilities, with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) unable to meet the initial deadline. While alternative compliance proposals were considered, they were deemed insufficient due to concerns over automation and manual flying skills. Partial compliance solutions have been identified, and operators must implement these interim measures or commit to achieving them within an acceptable timeframe.
