Defra is currently seeking views on a draft of the ‘Updated UK Plan for Shipments of Waste’ which implements the UK government policy of self-sufficiency in waste disposal by prohibiting imports and exports of waste to and from the UK for disposal. The plan was late updated in 2012 and is due another update to reflect the UK’s departure from the EU, in addition to certain policy and minor technical changes.
Four main updates are being proposed which include:
– aligning the UK Plan with the government’s NORM waste strategy
– inserting a new exception relating to the export of mercury and mercury-contaminated wastes for disposal
The consultation will close on 1st March 2021.
